So, who was the Duke of Kendal? There has only ever been one Duke of Kendal, and that was Charles Stuart, son of King James 2nd and Anne Hyde.

It is unlikely that he ever stopped by this pub to sup on a flagon of finest mead (or indeed any other watering hole in the area), as he was born in 1666 and died the next year.

There is, however, the local connection, as his grandfather Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon has the park named after him.
